I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to work (for/alongside) Terry Delahunty while he was the SSE/GM (Site Senior Executive / General Manager) at Mt Moss Mine Iron Ore Mine for (2 years). While my role consisted of Health Safety and Environment, Terrys knowledge and experience was an undoubted factor in the successful implementation of the vast (legislation/regulations) needing to be met.

Terry maintained open lines of communication between employees and management on all matters effecting safety, health and the environment. His aim was to meet or exceed industry requirements.

Everyone who worked for the company was encouraged to be proactive in the safe practises required to meet our health, safety and environmental targets. Training and support was provided to establish clear, precise and effective guidelines for all personnel to stay safe and develop skills in their chosen fields. This included the mandatory induction on joining the company, followed by relevant training, often on many types of plant and machinery. Risk assessments on all plant, machinery and activities were completed and periodically revisited, to ensure everyone was familiar with any and all appropriate control measures. All training was recorded.

reference-julie-barclay-02 Prompt constructive technical advice was a strength I found in Terry which led me to see why he was able to build a strong rapport with not only his employees and business colleagues but also establish a very good relationship with our local community. The community bonding proved to be an asset with the majority being neighbouring property owners, but also included others further afield, such as indigenous representatives from several groups and many business owners, (due to his dual responsibility as SSE for the company’s gold projects, which were spread over a wide area of Far North Queensland). Any concerns or queries of any kind, for example with boundary fences, stock piles or mined product or practises, were effectively communicated from either party with the property owners on occasions attending social evenings held at the mine camp. reference-julie-barclay-03 The rehabilitation programs in place were always a keen topic with the farmers who enjoyed seeing the environment and also various infrastructure of great benefit to them often returned to an even much better state than prior to the mining and all associated operations.

I believe many people have benefited from interacting with Terry through his professional realm. He is a man that proved approachable, honest and knowledgeable and a (great/interesting) guy to be around.
